Albert Julien Paul Bergevin war a French, painter, printmaker and poster artist. He grew up in Avranches, Normandy, the son of an antiquarian. Bergevin felt drawn to the artistic profession at an early age. From 1903, he frequently visited Paris. There, he first attended the courses of Louis Lavalley, then the Academie Julian, the Academie Ransom, and the Ecole des Beaux-Arts. At the height of his fame, he exhibited at the Salon d'Automne, and in 1910 he took part in the Salon des Independants. He was mobilized for World War I; at the end of which he worked in the Army Photo Archives (Service des archives photographiques de l'armee) in Paris. In the post-war years, he exhibited regularly at the Salon d'Automne and the Salon des Independants, as well as abroad, particularly in Japan. In 1928, he settled permanently in Avranches with his wife Marie-Jeanne Seguin and their two sons. In search of peace and quiet, he preferred to work in his studio in Saint-Jean-le-Thomas. He also collaborated with the Revue de l'Avranchin. In 1937 he was appointed teacher at the College d'Avranches. In 1941, shortly after his father's death in 1940, he gave up the position. In 1965, Bergevin donated around fifty paintings and several drawings to the Avranches Municipal Museum. The museum dedicated a room to him where about twenty of his paintings can be seen. Bergevin died at Rue de Geôle, on his parents' estate. In 1979, the garden of his studio in Saint-Jean-le-Thomas became the municipal park of the seaside resort.
