(2) Footnotes: Provenance: With Mary Cooke Antiques Limited The Patrick and Mavis Walker Silver Collection These are the arms of James BRUDENELL (1725-1811) on his accession as 5th Earl of Cardigan in 1790. He was the second son of George BRUDENELL (1685-1732) 3rd Earl of Cardigan by Lady Elizabeth BRUCE (1689-1745) daughter of Thomas BRUCE (1656-1741) 3rd Earl of Elgin. He was the brother of George MONTAGU previously BRUDENELL (1712-1790) 1st Duke Montagu and Thomas BRUDENELL-BRUCE (1729-1814) 2nd Earl of Ailesbury and 3rd Earl of Elgin. He inherited the Earldom of Cardigan on the death of his brother George MONTAGU whose titles included the 3rd Earl of Cardigan. He married firstly in 1760: Anne LEGGE (died 1786) daughter of George LEGGE (1704-1732) Viscount Lewisham; He married secondly in 1786: Lady Elizabeth WALDEGRAVE (1758-1823) daughter of John WALDEGRAVE (1718-1789) 3rd Earl Waldegrave. There was no issue from either marriage. The 5th Earl of Cardigan was earlier an MP for Shaftesbury, Hastings and Marlborough (1754-1780) when in 1780 he was created Baron Brudenell of Deene, Northamptonshire. He served as Deputy Cofferer of the Royal Household from 1755 to 1760, as Master of the Robes to the Prince of Wales from 1758 to 1760, who ascended as King George III, and as Keeper of the Privy Purse from 1760-1811. In 1791 he was appointed to the prestigious post of Constable and Governor of Windsor Castle, a post he held until his death in 1811. Deene Park is a 16th-century manor house that has been in the hands of the Brudenell family since 1514. Deene Park was built around a much older medieval manor house and incorporates parts of the older building. For many years the house was the seat of the Earls of Cardigan. Among the Earls resident at Deene was the 7th Earl of Cardigan, an officer in the British Army, who commanded the Light Brigade during the Crimean War and led the ill-fated Charge of the Light Brigade at the Battle of Balaclava.
